life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dizziness is a word for many funny feelings. It can mean many things. Some people feel like they are spinning. This is called vertigo. Vertigo can make you feel sick. Other people feel lightheaded. This is called presyncope. It feels like you might faint. Some people feel off balance. This is called disequilibrium. You might feel like the floor is tilting. It can make you fall.

Your body uses many parts to stay steady. Your inner ear helps you balance. Your eyes see where you are. Your muscles and bones also help. Your nervous system, or your body's wiring, sends signals to your brain. If these parts have trouble, you feel dizzy.

Many things can cause dizziness. A sudden drop in blood pressure can do it. Not enough blood in the brain can cause it too. Some people feel dizzy if they stand up too fast. Dehydration, or not having enough water, is another cause. Even some medicines can make you feel dizzy. It is a very common feeling for many people.
