The thigh is the part of your leg between the hip and the knee. It is a key part of your lower limb. Inside this area sits one very important bone. This bone is called the femur. The femur is a long bone with a middle part called a diaphysis. It also has two ends called epiphyses. The femur is the longest and strongest bone in your body.

This bone works like a sturdy pillar for your body. The top of the femur forms a ball and socket joint at the hip. It connects to a part of the pelvic bone called the acetabulum. The bottom of the bone forms a hinge joint at the knee. This joint connects with the tibia and the patella, which is your kneecap. The femur acts as an anchor for all your thigh muscles. This setup helps you move and stand up straight.

Your thigh is divided into three separate areas called compartments. Tough tissue called fascia keeps these areas apart. Each compartment has its own group of muscles and blood supply. The front part contains the quadriceps. These include the rectus femoris and three vastus muscles. The back part has the hamstring muscles. These include the semimembranosus, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris. The middle part has the adductor muscles, such as the adductor magnus.

Blood and nerves travel through these compartments to keep them working. The femoral artery and the obturator artery provide blood. Many veins also carry blood back through the thigh. These include the femoral vein and the deep femoral vein. Some veins, like the saphenous veins, are part of the superficial system. If your hamstrings are tight, you might get runner's knee. This happens when the kneecap rubs against the femur.

Because these are some of the largest muscles, they are very important. Doing strength training can help these muscles grow. This activity also helps increase blood flow to the area. People use different clothes to show or cover their thighs. Some styles include short shorts or miniskirts. Other styles include thigh-high boots. In some Islamic countries, showing the thighs is not allowed.
