Calf (leg)

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The calf is the back part of your lower leg. It is a very important part of human anatomy. This area contains the muscles of the posterior compartment. These muscles help you move and stand up. The calf is what makes the back of the leg look full. Without these muscles, moving would be much harder.

How does the calf work? It uses several different muscles to move your foot. The two largest muscles are the gastrocnemius and the soleus. Together, they are called the triceps surae. These two muscles join into the Achilles tendon. This thick cord connects them to the calcaneus, or heel bone. Other smaller muscles attach to your knee and your toes.

People have used the word calf for a long time. The word comes from Middle English words like kalf or kalfi. It might even come from the same root as the word for a young cow. We see the word calf used in Middle English around AD 1350. The term calf of the leg was used around AD 1425. In the past, some people thought a small calf was a sign of inferiority.

Doctors study the calf to learn about health. They look at calf size to find health risks. In Spain, a study of 22,000 people aged 65 or older was done. It found that small calves might mean less nutrition. A study in France looked at 6,265 people over age 65. It found a link between calf size and carotid plaques. Swelling can also happen from things like varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis.

You can train your calves with special exercises. One way is to point your toes down. This movement is called plantarflexion. You can do standing calf raises with straight knees. This targets the gastrocnemius muscle more. You can also do seated calf raises with bent knees. This targets the soleus muscle more. These muscles recover very fast from hard work. They often only need 10 to 60 seconds of rest.
