Your hamstrings are three important muscles on the back of your thigh.

They sit between your hip and your knee. These muscles have long names: the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris. They are called biarticular muscles because they cross two joints. This means they work on both the hip and the knee at once. These muscles are vital for moving your body every day. They help you walk, run, and jump with ease.

These muscles work by contracting and lengthening to move your bones. When they contract, they help you bend your knee. They also help you straighten or extend your hip. The semitendinosus and semimembranosus help bend the knee and rotate the lower leg inward. The biceps femoris helps rotate the lower leg outward. The long head of the biceps femoris also helps extend the hip. This is how you begin the motion of walking.

People have used the word "hamstring" for a long time. The word "ham" comes from Old English words like "ham" or "hom." These words meant a hollow or a bend in the knee. They also came from a word meaning "crooked." By the 15th century, the word began to mean the leg of an animal. Today, we use it to talk about these specific muscles in humans. This shows how our language grows over hundreds of years.

There are specific rules for what makes a muscle a "true" hamstring. These muscles must start at a spot called the ischial tuberosity. They must also end near the knee joint on the tibia or fibula. They are also controlled by the tibial part of the sciatic nerve. The biceps femoris is often injured more than the others.

In some sports, hamstring injuries make up 19% of all injuries. These injuries can cause a person to miss 24 days of competition.

Sometimes, these muscles can get hurt during fast running or dancing.

A doctor might use an MRI or an ultrasound to see the damage. These tools show if a muscle is torn or just strained. Doctors can even use a part of the semitendinosus tendon for surgery. They use it to fix the ACL, which is a major ligament in the knee. This helps the knee stay strong and stable for the person.
