You have three muscles on the back of your thigh.

These are the hamstrings. They sit between your hip and your knee. The three muscles have long names. They are the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris.

These muscles help you move every day. They help you walk, run, and jump. They also help you bend your knee. They can also help you straighten your hip. These muscles cross two joints. This means they work on both the hip and the knee.

Sometimes, these muscles get hurt. This can happen during sports or dancing. A hurt muscle is called a strain.

If you stretch the muscle too much, it can tear. This often happens when running very fast.

Doctors use tools to see the injury. They use an MRI or an ultrasound.

These tools show if the muscle is torn. The biceps femoris is the muscle that gets hurt most often. Doctors can even use part of a tendon to fix a knee. This helps a person's knee stay strong.
