One single bone lives inside your thigh. This bone is called the femur. The femur is a long bone. It is the longest and strongest bone in your body. The top of the femur fits into your hip. The bottom part connects to your knee.

Your thigh has three main parts. These parts are called compartments. Tough tissue called fascia holds these parts apart. Each part has its own group of muscles. The front has the quadriceps muscles. The back has the hamstring muscles. The middle part has the adductor muscles. These are some of the largest muscles in your body.

Blood flows through the thigh in many ways. The femoral artery is a main blood vessel. It carries blood through the area. Many veins also carry blood back. If your hamstring muscles are too tight, your knee might hurt. This is sometimes called runner's knee. It happens when the kneecap rubs the femur.
