The knee is the largest joint in your body.

It helps you carry your weight. You use it to walk, run, and jump. The knee joins your thigh bone, called the femur, to your lower leg bone, called the tibia.

Your kneecap is also part of the knee. We call this bone the patella. At birth, the patella is made of soft cartilage. It turns into hard bone between ages three and five.

Inside the knee, there is a special liquid. This is called synovial fluid. It stays inside a bag called a joint capsule. This fluid helps the parts of the knee move smoothly.

Thin, bouncy tissue protects your bones. This is called cartilage. There are two kinds. One kind is called hyaline cartilage. It covers the surfaces where bones meet. Another kind is called the meniscus. These are two small disks of tissue. They help the joint work well.

Strong bands called ligaments hold the bones together. They keep the knee steady. For example, the ACL is a ligament inside the knee. It stops the leg bone from sliding too far.
