Ligaments are strong bands in your body. They are made of tough tissue. Their main job is to connect bone to bone.

This helps your joints stay steady. Ligaments also help birds and dinosaurs. These animals use them to hold flight feathers to their bones. All land animals with internal bones have them.

Ligaments are different from tendons. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Ligaments connect one bone to another. They are also viscoelastic. This means they can stretch under tension. Then they return to their original shape.

Some people have very stretchy ligaments. This is called hypermobility. It lets their joints bend much further.

If a ligament breaks, a joint can become unstable. This means it might move in wrong ways. Sometimes doctors use surgery to fix them. They can even use artificial ligaments. These are made of man-made materials like polymers. An average adult human has about 900 ligaments in their body.
