Bones give your body its shape. They also protect your vital organs. For example, your skull protects your brain. Your ribs protect your lungs. Most adults have 206 bones.

Bones also store minerals like calcium. This helps keep your blood balanced. Inside your bones is a red marrow. This marrow makes millions of blood cells every second.

Muscles make your bones move. Skeletal muscles are attached to your bones. They work by contracting, which means they tighten up. Nerves send signals to tell muscles to move.

To connect these parts, your body uses special tissues. Tendons are tough bands that join muscles to bones. Ligaments are bands that join bones to other bones. They help hold your joints together.

Joints are where two bones meet. Some joints have a liquid called synovial fluid. This fluid helps the bones glide without rubbing. Cartilage also acts as a cushion between bones.
