Most connective tissue has three parts. It has cells. It has ground substance, which is a clear fluid. It also has fibers. These fibers are like tiny strings. Collagen fibers are very strong. They bind bones and tissues together. Elastic fibers help organs stretch and snap back. Reticular fibers make a scaffold, or a frame, for other cells.

There are many kinds of this tissue. Some are loose. Others are dense. Dense regular tissue is found in tendons. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Dense irregular tissue provides strength in many directions. Some tissue is special. Bone and cartilage are supportive tissues. Blood and lymph are fluid tissues. They do not have fibers.

Adipose tissue is also connective tissue. This is your body fat. It acts like a cushion. It protects your body from bumps. Some tissues also help you heal. Granulation tissue forms when a wound heals. This helps your body get better.
