Your skin has a deep layer called the dermis.

It sits between your top skin and your body's inner parts. This layer acts like a cushion for stress. It has two main parts. The top part is the papillary dermis. This part is thin and has finger-like shapes. These shapes are called papillae. They help the top skin stay joined to the dermis. They also help move nutrients and oxygen between layers. On your hands and feet, these shapes make fingerprints.

The bottom part is the reticular dermis. This layer is much thicker. It is full of collagen. Collagen is a protein that gives your skin strength. This layer also has elastin. Elastin is a fiber that lets skin stretch. The dermis holds many important things. It has hair, sweat glands, and oil glands. It also has blood vessels. These vessels carry food to your cells. The dermis also helps you feel. It has sensors for touch and heat.
