The knee is the largest joint in the human body.

It is a very important part of how we move. The knee helps us carry our weight when we walk or run. It also helps us move in a vertical direction when we jump. This joint is a modified hinge joint. This means it works like a door hinge to let the leg bend and straighten. It also allows for a little bit of turning or rotation.

To understand how it works, we look at the bones. The knee joins the femur, which is the thigh bone, to the tibia. The tibia is the main bone in your lower leg. There is also the patella, which is your kneecap. The patella slides through a groove on the front of the femur. Inside the joint, a liquid called synovial fluid keeps things moving smoothly. This fluid is held inside a protective bag called the joint capsule.

Special tissues help the bones glide without rubbing. One type is hyaline cartilage, which covers the surfaces where bones meet. Another type is fibrous cartilage, which is found in the menisci. The menisci are two disks that sit in the joint. The medial meniscus is bigger and thinner than the lateral meniscus. The lateral meniscus is more curved and shaped almost like a circle. These disks help the joint handle pressure.

Strong bands called ligaments keep the knee steady and safe. Some ligaments are inside the joint capsule, like the cruciate ligaments. The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, stops the tibia from sliding too far forward. The posterior cruciate ligament, or PCL, stops the tibia from sliding too far back. Other ligaments are outside the capsule. The medial collateral ligament, or MCL, protects the inside of the knee. The lateral collateral ligament, or LCL, protects the outside of the knee.

Your knee changes as you grow up. When a baby is born, the kneecap is not yet hard bone. It is actually made of soft cartilage. This cartilage turns into bone through a process called ossification. This change usually happens between the ages of three and five years. Because the kneecap is the largest sesamoid bone in the body, this takes a long time. This growth is part of how your body builds its strong frame.
