Your bones connect at special spots called joints, or articulations.

These connections link your skeleton into one working whole. Joints are very important for your body. They help you move, stay steady, and keep your balance. They allow for many actions like bending or jumping. Joints also help you carry weight during your daily activities. Without them, your bones would not work together.

There are different ways joints work. Some joints are built for stability instead of movement. For example, sutures in your skull permit very little movement.

This helps protect your brain and sense organs. Other joints, like your knee or shoulder, are synovial joints. These joints are freely movable and almost frictionless. They can handle heavy loads while staying smooth. They use a small space called a synovial cavity to move.

Scientists group joints in a few different ways. One way is called structural classification. This looks at the binding tissue that holds the bones. Fibrous joints use dense tissue rich in collagen fibers. Cartilaginous joints are joined by cartilage. Synovial joints are not directly joined by tissue. Another way is functional classification. This looks at how much a joint can move. Some move a lot, while others move very little.

There are many specific types of joints in your body. You have joints in your hands, elbows, and wrists. Your hips and knees are also important joints. Some joints are called simple joints because they use two surfaces. Compound joints use three or more surfaces. Complex joints, like your knee, use an extra part called a meniscus. Even your teeth connect to your jaw in a joint. This specific type is called a gomphosis.

Sometimes, joints can have problems called arthropathy. This is a general name for joint disorders. Arthritis is a common type that causes inflammation.

Osteoarthritis happens when the cartilage breaks down. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Gout is caused by uric acid crystals in the joint. You can help keep your joints healthy with exercise. Swimming is a great way to move with less damage.
