The hip is a very important part of the human body. It is a joint that connects your legs to your main trunk. This joint helps you support your weight when you stand still. It also helps you stay balanced when you walk or run.

The hip is located on the outer side of your pelvis. It sits below the top edge of your hip bone. This area is also near your large leg muscles.

The hip works as a ball and socket joint. This means a round ball fits into a cup-shaped hole. The ball is the head of your femur, which is your thigh bone. The cup is called the acetabulum. This socket is part of your pelvis.

A ring of tissue called the labrum helps hold the ball in place. Both the ball and the socket are covered in a smooth layer. This layer is called articular hyaline cartilage. It helps the bones move smoothly against each other.

Learning about the hip has a long history. In the past, people used different names for it. A person named Celsus used the Latin word coxa to mean hip. Later, a writer named Pliny the Elder used it to mean the hip bone. Today, doctors use specific terms for the hip. They might call it the acetabulofemoral joint. This name describes the connection between the pelvis and the femur.

There are many specific facts about how the hip is built. In adults, three bones called the ilium, ischium, and pubis fuse into one. Children have a Y-shaped growth plate called the triradiate cartilage. This cartilage fuses shut between the ages of 14 and 16.

The femoral head has an average radius of 2.5 cm. One very strong band in your body is the iliofemoral ligament. It can hold a weight of 350 kg. This ligament helps you stand upright without using your muscles.

You can think of the hip like a heavy-duty machine. It must be strong enough to carry your whole body. It also needs to be flexible enough to let you move. The hip joint has a very large range of movement. It is the second largest range in the human body. Only the shoulder joint can move more than the hip. This allows you to move your legs in many different directions.
