Your hip is a very strong joint. It connects your legs to your main body.

This is a ball and socket joint. The top of your thigh bone, called the femur, has a round head. This head fits into a cup in your pelvis. We call this cup the acetabulum. A ring of tissue called the labrum helps hold the ball in the cup.

The hip joint has a big job. It supports your weight when you stand still. It also helps when you walk or run. It helps you keep your balance.

Three pelvic bones join to make the hip area. These are the ilium, ischium, and pubis. In adults, these bones have fused into one.

Strong bands called ligaments hold the bones together. One ligament, the iliofemoral ligament, is the strongest in your whole body. It helps you stand upright without using your muscles. Small tubes carry blood to the bone to keep it healthy. This blood comes from parts of the deep artery of the thigh.
