Your shoulder is a very busy part of your body. It helps you lift, push, and pull.

The shoulder is made of three main bones. These are the clavicle, or collarbone. There is also the scapula, which is the shoulder blade. Finally, there is the humerus, the upper arm bone.

The main part of the shoulder is the glenohumeral joint. This is a ball and socket joint. The round head of the humerus fits into a shallow hole in the scapula. This hole is called the glenoid cavity. Because the hole is shallow, your arm can move in a full circle. This makes it a very mobile joint. However, it can also slip out of place easily.

To stay steady, the shoulder uses many parts. A group of four muscles is called the rotator cuff. These muscles hold the arm bone in its socket. Other parts like ligaments and tendons also help.

Small sacs called bursae act like cushions. They help the bones and muscles glide smoothly without rubbing.
