The pelvis is a strong ring of bones.

It sits between your abdomen and your thighs. This ring connects your spine to your legs. It helps you stand and walk. The bones also act like a basin. They hold and protect many body parts. These parts include the reproductive organs and the rectum.

The bones in the pelvis are very special. Each side has three parts called the ilium, ischium, and pubis. In children, these are separate bones. During puberty, they fuse into one bone. The pelvic floor is a layer of muscle below the bones. This floor helps support your organs. It also helps control certain openings in your body.

Men and women have different pelvises. This is due to a need for childbirth. A female pelvis is wider and lighter. This makes a larger gap for a baby to pass through. A male pelvis is taller and narrower. It is built more for walking. Because of this, women have a different way of walking. Their hips swing more when they move.
