The torso is the central part of many animals. People also call it the trunk. Your head, neck, and tail grow from it. Your arms and legs also grow from the torso.

You can divide the torso into parts. The upper part is the chest. This is also called the thorax. Your arms grow from this area. The middle part is the abdomen. Some people call it the midriff. The bottom part is the pelvis. Your legs grow from the lower torso. The back is also part of it.

Most important organs live inside the torso. In the chest, the rib cage protects the heart and lungs. The abdomen holds organs for digestion. This includes the stomach and the liver. The intestines take nutrients from food. The kidneys make urine. This liquid goes to the bladder to be stored.

The torso also has many muscles. These help your body move. Nerves send signals to the organs and muscles. These nerves come from the spinal cord. They help you feel things through your skin.
