life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A body is the physical part of a living thing. It is the material that makes up an organism. Some things, like slime molds, start as one cell. They grow into many cells to make a body.

Plants have a body too. Their bodies have two main parts. One part is the shoot system. The other part is the root system.

Scientists study bodies in many ways. One way is morphology. This is the study of body parts. Another way is anatomy. This looks at how parts fit together. Experts also study histology. This is the study of tissues. They also look at cytology. This is the study of cells. Cells are the tiny parts that build tissues and organs.

Humans have many body parts. We have a head and a neck. We have a torso and two arms. We also have two legs. When a person dies, their body is a corpse. The dead body of an insect is a carcass.

There is also physiology. This is the study of how a body works.
