Body cavity

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Your body has many spaces inside. These spaces are called cavities. They hold your important parts. They also keep them safe.

Two large areas are in your body. One is the dorsal cavity. This is in your back. It has two parts. The cranial cavity holds your brain. The spinal cavity holds your spinal cord. These parts are protected by the skull and spine. A clear liquid called cerebrospinal fluid cushions them.

The other large area is the ventral cavity. This is in your front. It has two main parts. The thoracic cavity is in your chest. It holds your heart and lungs. The abdominopelvic cavity is in your lower body. It is very large. This area holds your stomach, liver, and kidneys. It also holds your bladder.

These spaces help your organs work. They let parts like your lungs expand. They let your stomach grow when you eat. Some spaces have thin linings called membranes. These linings can hold fluid. This fluid acts like a soft cushion for your organs.
