Most people call it the shinbone. It is the second largest bone in your body. Only the femur, or thigh bone, is larger. The tibia is a long bone. This means it has a long middle part called a diaphysis. It also has two rounded ends called epiphyses.

The top end is near your knee. The bottom end is near your ankle.

The tibia is very strong. It helps hold up your whole body. It is the part of the knee that carries your weight. The tibia connects to the femur at the knee joint. It also connects to the fibula. The fibula is a smaller bone in your leg. A thin layer of tissue connects these two bones. This is called an interosseous membrane.

At the bottom, the tibia forms part of your ankle. On the inside, it has a bump called the medial malleolus. Blood flows to the bone through a nutrient artery. This helps keep the bone healthy.
