life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The gluteus maximus is a very big muscle. It is the largest muscle in the human body. It sits on the outside of your hip. This muscle helps make the shape of your bottom. There are other muscles there too. They are called the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. Together, people often call them the glutes.

This muscle has a very important job. It helps you straighten your leg at the hip. It also helps you stand up straight. If you lean forward, this muscle pulls your pelvis back. This helps you stay upright. It is very helpful when you stand on one leg. This muscle is much bigger in humans than in chimps. Chimps have flatter hips. They cannot stand up straight like we do.

This muscle helps a lot when you run. It helps control your body as you move fast. People use this muscle in many sports. You use it for running and lifting weights. You can train it with squats or lunges. Doctors can even test its strength. They might ask you to stand up from a chair many times. This helps them see how strong you are.
