The triceps is a large muscle. It sits on the back of the upper arm.

Its name means "three-headed muscle of the arm." This is because it has three parts. We call these parts heads. The three heads are the medial, lateral, and long head. All three heads cross the elbow joint. The long head also crosses the shoulder joint.

This muscle helps you straighten your arm. This action is called extension. The muscle works in a special way. It contracts to straighten the elbow. It expands when you bend the elbow.

The different heads have different jobs. The lateral head helps with quick, strong force. The medial head helps with precise, low-force moves. The long head helps with steady force. It also helps keep the shoulder joint steady.

Doctors can test your arm nerves with a reflex. They do this by hitting the triceps. This test checks the nerves in your spine. Most people use the radial nerve to move this muscle. However, some people have a different nerve there too.
