Triceps

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The triceps is a large muscle on the back of the upper limb. Its scientific name is the triceps brachii. This name comes from Latin words meaning "three-headed muscle of the arm."

It is a very important muscle for many vertebrates. The muscle helps you move your arm in many ways. It is the main muscle used to straighten the elbow joint. This action is called extension. Without this muscle, you could not easily push things away from you.

This muscle works by changing its shape. When you straighten your elbow, the triceps contracts. This means the muscle pulls tight and gets shorter. When you bend your elbow, the muscle expands.

The muscle has three distinct parts called heads. These are the medial head, the lateral head, and the long head. All three heads cross the elbow joint. However, the long head is special because it also crosses the shoulder joint. This helps it work with the shoulder too.

Each of the three heads has a specific job to do. The lateral head is used for movements that need high-intensity force. The medial head is used for precise, low-force movements.

The long head is different from the others. It is used when you need to hold a steady force for a long time. It also helps keep the shoulder joint stable. Some people think of the heads as independent muscles because they have different roles. They all join together at a single tendon near the elbow.

Scientists have studied how the body sends signals to this muscle. Most people use the radial nerve to move the triceps. However, some people have different setups in their bodies. In about 14% of people, the long head uses the axillary nerve. In 3% of people, it actually uses both nerves at once.

Doctors can test these nerves using a triceps reflex. They do this by hitting the muscle to see how the arm reacts. This test helps them check the spinal nerves C6 and C7.

Learning about the triceps helps us understand how we move every day. You use it when you do a push up or a bench press.

Even simple tasks like writing use the muscle to keep the elbow steady. You can also work this muscle with isolation moves like cable push-downs. It is interesting to see how different animals have different triceps. For example, horses have a very heavy long head. Many mammals like dogs or pigs even have a fourth head called an accessory head.
