The biceps brachii is a large muscle in your upper arm.

Its name comes from a Latin phrase. It means "two-headed muscle of the arm." This name describes its two distinct bundles. These bundles start at your shoulder blade, also called the scapula. They join together to form one single muscle belly. This muscle sits between your shoulder and your elbow. It is one of three muscles in the front part of the arm.

This muscle works in a very specific way. It has a short head and a long head. The long head is unique because it crosses two joints. It travels through both the shoulder and the elbow. This allows it to help move your arm in many ways. The muscle attaches to a bone called the radius. A small sac called a bursa helps the tendon move smoothly. This prevents rubbing as you move your forearm.

Scientists and artists have studied this muscle for a long time. Leonardo da Vinci made drawings of the biceps between 1505 and 1510. He understood how the muscle turns the palm upward. However, his work was not shared widely at that time. It was not until 1713 that William Cheselden recorded this movement. Later, Guillaume Duchenne wrote about it in 1867. His work remains a very important reference for doctors today.

There are many interesting facts about how people are built. Most people have two heads on this muscle. However, a third head appears in about 10% of people. This is a normal variation in the human body. In very rare cases, people have even more heads. The muscle also gets blood from the brachial artery. This artery runs near the tendon at the elbow. Doctors can feel your pulse there quite easily.

The biceps helps you do many everyday tasks. Its most important jobs are flexing the elbow and supination. Supination is the way you turn your palm toward the sky. You use this muscle when you lift a heavy bag. You can also strengthen it with weight training. Many people perform a bicep curl to build this muscle. Some exercises focus on the short head. Others help work the long head. This helps you stay strong for many activities.
