Gluteus maximus

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The gluteus maximus is a very special part of the human body. It is the single largest muscle in all of us. This muscle sits on the outside of the hips. It has a thick, fleshy shape like a four-sided figure. This shape helps create the look of the buttocks. There are two other muscles nearby called the medius and the minimus. People often call all three of these muscles the glutes.

This muscle works in many different ways to move the body. Its main job is to straighten the leg at the hip. When the leg is bent, the muscle pulls it back into a straight line. It also helps the pelvis tilt forward. The muscle can help move the leg inward or rotate it outward. It even helps steady the leg bone when you are standing still. This happens because the muscle connects to a thick band of tissue on the side of the leg.

Scientists have studied how this muscle helps humans move differently than other animals. In humans, the muscle is much larger and thicker. It is about 1.6 times larger relative to body mass than in chimpanzees. In chimps, this muscle group makes up about 11.7% of the hip muscle mass. In humans, it makes up about 18.3% of that mass. This large size is a key feature of being human. It gives us the power to keep our upper bodies upright.

Researchers believe this muscle grew large to help with specific movements. While it helps us stand tall, it is very important for running. When we run, the muscle helps control the trunk of the body. It also helps slow down the swinging leg. Walking does not actually use this muscle very much. This suggests the muscle grew to help with fast, dynamic activities. These skills would have been very useful for early humans who needed to run or climb.

Because it is so important, people use the gluteus maximus in many ways today. Athletes use it for sports like weight-lifting and running. You can train this muscle with exercises like squats, lunges, or deadlifts. Doctors also check this muscle to see if someone is healing from an injury. They might use a test where a person stands up from a chair many times in thirty seconds. This helps them measure strength and endurance. In art, these muscles have been shown since Ancient Greece as a symbol of strength.
