A squat is a powerful strength exercise for the body.

It involves lowering your hips from a standing position and then standing back up. This movement is vital for building larger and stronger lower body muscles. It also helps develop core strength in your middle. Many people use this move in regular exercise programs. It is even a main part of the sport called powerlifting. In that sport, the squat is one of three big lifts.

The other two lifts are the bench press and the deadlift.

To perform a squat, you must follow specific steps. You start by standing in an upright position. First, you move your hips back and bend your knees. This lowers your torso and any weight you are carrying. Next, you use your muscles to return to an upright position.

During the descent, your hip and knee joints flex. As you stand up, those joints extend again. Your ankles also move in a specific way during these steps. It is important to move carefully to avoid injury. You should not descend too fast or lean your torso too far forward.

People use different tools to make squats harder or safer.

Many lifters use a loaded barbell to add weight. You can rest the bar on your upper trapezius muscle. This is called a high bar squat. You can also hold it lower on your rear deltoids. This is known as a low bar squat. Some people use dumbbells or kettlebells instead.

A power cage can help keep you safe while lifting. You might also see people using weight lifting belts. These help create pressure in the abdomen to support the body. Some even use heeled shoes to help them squat deeper.

There are many different ways to do a squat.

A front squat means holding the barbell across your collarbones. A sumo squat uses a wider stance with feet pointing out. You can even try a single leg squat to improve balance. This is also called a unilateral squat.

There is also a box squat where you sit on a bench. The hack squat is a unique version with a history in Germany. It was named after a way Prussian soldiers clicked their heels.

Squats are more than just a simple leg move. They connect to many different types of physical training. For example, the Zercher squat was named after a strongman named Ed Zercher.

This is called a variable resistance squat. It makes the weight feel different at different parts of the move. These details show how much people have studied this one movement.
