Stud poker

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Stud poker is a group of card games. In these games, players get some cards face up. They also get some cards face down. These hidden cards are called hole cards. This name gave us the phrase "ace in the hole." It means having a secret advantage.

Stud poker is very old. Some versions were popular during the American Revolutionary War. Five-card stud became famous during the American Civil War. Soldiers on both sides played it often. Later, seven-card stud became a common way to play.

There are many ways to play. In Razz, the lowest hand wins the prize. In high-low stud, the prize is split. One person gets it for the high hand. Another person gets it for the low hand. Some games use special rules. In Mexican stud, players might use a joker. In Caribbean stud, players play against a dealer. This game started in Aruba in the 1980s. Some games use "wild cards." These are cards that can act like any card you want. This makes the game very exciting!
