Community card poker

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Community card poker is a group of card games. In these games, some cards are shared. These shared cards are called the "board." They sit face up in the middle of the table. Every player can use these cards to make a hand. Each player also gets private cards. These are called "hole cards." They stay face down so others cannot see them.

Texas hold 'em is the most popular version. It started sometime in the 1920s. In this game, you get two hole cards. Then, five cards are dealt to the board. These cards come out in stages. The first three cards are called the "flop." The fourth card is the "turn." The final card is the "river."

Players use their cards and the board to make a five-card hand. In Omaha hold 'em, the rules are different. You get four hole cards. You must use exactly two of them. You also must use exactly three cards from the board. Some games use a "stripped deck." This means some cards are removed from the deck. This can change how the game is played.
