Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby under one year old.

Doctors use this name only when they cannot find a reason for the death. They must perform a thorough autopsy, which is a medical exam of the body. They also investigate the scene where the baby was sleeping. They check the medical history of the family as well. This is called a diagnosis of exclusion. This means they name it SIDS only after all other causes are ruled out.

Scientists believe SIDS happens because of a few things working together. A baby might have a natural biological vulnerability, which is a weakness in their body. At the same time, they might be at a critical age of development. Finally, an environmental stressor might act as a trigger.

These triggers can be things in the sleeping area. For example, sleeping on the stomach or side can increase risk. Being too warm or being near tobacco smoke are also factors. Soft objects in the bed or sharing a bed can play a role too.

Most SIDS cases happen before a baby is six months old. The most frequent time is between two and four months of age. This is a critical time because a baby's ability to wake up from sleep is not yet mature. SIDS is also more common in boys than in girls. In the United States, SIDS was the third leading cause of death for babies under one year in 2011. Globally, there were about 19,200 SIDS deaths in 2015. This was a decrease from 22,000 deaths in 1990.

There are many ways to help keep babies safe. The most effective way is to put a baby on their back to sleep.

Using a firm mattress that is separate from adult beds is also helpful. It is best to avoid loose bedding, soft surfaces, or stuffed animals in the crib. Keeping the room at a cool temperature can help too. Some studies show that breastfeeding and immunizations may also help prevent SIDS. Using a pacifier is another measure that can be used.

Understanding SIDS helps us learn how to protect young children. We know that certain habits can make a big difference in safety. For example, "Safe to Sleep" campaigns have helped lower SIDS rates by up to 80% in some areas. Even though the exact cause is still unknown, these steps provide real protection. It is important to remember that SIDS is unexpected and can be very hard for families. Providing support to these families is a vital part of helping them through their grief.
