Scientists and doctors measure this using the infant mortality rate, or IMR. This is the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. There is also a child mortality rate. This compares deaths for all children up to five years of age. These numbers help us understand how healthy a population is. They show how much help babies are getting to stay alive.

Many different things can cause these deaths. Some babies are born too early, which is called a preterm birth. A baby is preterm if they are born before 37 weeks. These babies may have trouble with their breathing or their skin. Their bodies might not be fully ready to work on their own. Other causes include infections, like pneumonia or malaria. Some babies are also born with conditions called congenital malformations. These are health problems that are present at birth, like heart defects.

Researchers have studied these patterns for a long time. In 1950, the global child mortality rate was 22.5%. By 2015, that number dropped significantly to 4.5%. The infant mortality rate also went down during that time. It fell from 65 deaths per 1,000 births to 29 deaths per 1,000. In 1990, there were 8.8 million infant deaths globally. By 2021, the number of children dying before age five dropped to 5 million. These numbers show that many people are working to improve health.

Many of these deaths can be prevented with simple steps. Using clean drinking water helps stop many sicknesses. Vaccines, or immunizations, protect babies from dangerous germs. Good nutrition and breastfeeding also help babies grow strong. In the United States, one big risk is low birth weight. This can be caused by many different things in a person's environment. In some places, like sub-Saharan Africa, the infant mortality rate is 68 deaths per 1,000 births. This is higher than in other regions studied.

We can see how much progress has been made through global goals. The United Nations used child mortality to track the Millennium Development Goals. Now, they use it for the Sustainable Development Goals. Goal Number 3 is to ensure healthy lives for everyone. An analysis of 200 countries found that 133 are already meeting this target. Another 13 countries are working toward meeting it by 2030. This shows that health is a major focus for the whole world. We are learning more every day about how to keep babies safe.
