Doctors measure this using the infant mortality rate. This is the number of deaths for every 1,000 live births. Many things can cause these deaths. Some babies are born too early. This is called preterm birth. A baby is preterm if it is born before 37 weeks. These babies may have trouble breathing. Their bodies may not be fully ready to work. Other causes include infections and heart problems. Some babies have conditions they are born with. These are called congenital malformations.

Many of these deaths can be prevented. Using clean water helps stop sickness. Vaccines also keep babies safe from germs. Good food helps babies grow strong. In 1950, the child mortality rate was 22.5%. By 2015, it dropped to 4.5%. This shows that health is getting better. Many countries are working to reach new health goals.
