SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby under one year old.

Doctors use this name when they cannot find a cause. They look at the baby's medical history. They also study the place where the baby slept. This is called an autopsy.

Most SIDS cases happen before a baby is six months old. Many deaths happen between two and four months of age. This is a time when a baby's body is still growing. Their ability to wake up from sleep is not yet mature. SIDS is more common in boys than in girls.

Scientists think many factors work together to cause SIDS. A baby might have a natural weakness in their body. Then, something in the room might act as a trigger. For example, tobacco smoke can be a trigger. Sleeping on a stomach or side can also be a risk. Being too warm is another risk.

We can help keep babies safe. The best way is to put a baby on their back to sleep. Using a firm mattress is also good. It is best to avoid soft bedding or stuffed animals in the crib.
