There are different types of this ear sickness.

One type is called acute otitis media. This is a fast infection. It often causes ear pain. Young children might cry more or sleep poorly. They may also have a fever. Doctors look at the tympanic membrane, which is the eardrum. If the eardrum looks red or bulges out, it helps them know it is an infection.

Another type is otitis media with effusion. This is also called glue ear. This happens when fluid gets stuck in the ear. It does not always cause pain. However, it can make it hard to hear.

Some people feel like their ear is full.

A third type is chronic suppurative otitis media. This is a long-term swelling. It can cause a hole in the eardrum. This hole lets fluid leak out of the ear. This can also lead to hearing loss.

Many things can help prevent ear sickness. Vaccines can help protect children. Breastfeeding also helps keep ears healthy. Doctors can use medicine to help with the pain.
