life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Otitis externa is a name for an ear infection. Many people call it swimmer's ear. It is an inflammation, or swelling, of the ear canal.

This swelling can make the ear feel full. It may also cause itching or redness. Some people find it hard to hear. This happens if swelling or liquid blocks the ear.

Most cases are caused by bacteria, which are tiny germs. These germs need a way into the skin. You might get an infection if you swim in dirty water. Water trapped in the ear can also help. Using cotton swabs can scratch the skin. This allows germs to enter.

It often hurts to touch or pull the outer ear. This is a main sign of the condition. Doctors treat most cases with ear drops. These drops may have antibiotics to kill germs. Some also have steroids to stop the swelling. Most people feel better in just one day. To stay healthy, do not put small objects in your ears. Let your ears dry on their own.
