Many people call this eczema. It is not a sickness you can catch from others. It can happen in many ways. Some people get it because of things they touch. This is called contact dermatitis.

One kind happens when you touch something that hurts your skin. This is called irritant dermatitis. It often happens to hands that get wet a lot. Another kind is an allergy. This happens when your skin reacts to a specific thing.

There is also atopic dermatitis. This is the most common type. It often starts when people are children. It can make the skin look dry and red. On dark skin, it might look brown or purple. It often shows up in the folds of the arms or behind the knees.

Doctors can help. People use creams to stop the itch. Some use steroid creams. These should not be used for more than two weeks.

Other skin issues look different. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can cause flaky skin on the scalp. In babies, this is called cradle cap. It can look like a thick, yellow rash.
