life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Otitis externa is a medical term for inflammation in the ear canal. Many people know it as swimmer's ear. This condition causes the skin inside the ear to swell and become red.

It can cause ear pain, itching, and a feeling of fullness. Sometimes, the swelling or liquid discharge can block the ear canal. This can lead to temporary conductive hearing loss, where sounds seem muffled. Most people will experience at least one brief episode in their lives.

This condition happens through a specific way it works. First, there must be germs like bacteria or fungi present. Second, the skin in the ear canal must have a tiny break or injury. The skin in the canal is very thin and sits close to the bone.

Small objects like cotton swabs, hair pins, or fingernails can easily tear this skin. Once the skin is broken, germs can enter and cause an infection. Water from swimming can also soak the skin and make it easier for germs to grow.

Doctors look for specific signs to find the cause. A major sign is pain when someone touches or pulls the outer ear. They may also feel pain if the tragus, which is the small bump in front of the ear, is pressed.

In severe cases, the ear canal looks very narrow due to swelling. Some people may also see an ear discharge that has a smell. Doctors can use a tool called an otoscope to look inside. They might also test a sample of the liquid to see which germs are there.

There are many interesting facts about how often this happens. About 1% to 3% of people get it every year. More than 95% of these cases are acute, which means they happen suddenly and last less than six weeks. Chronic cases last longer than three months and are often caused by allergies. It is most common in children between ages seven and twelve. It also affects elderly people and those living in warm, wet climates.

Treating the ear is similar to how you might prevent it. Most acute cases are treated with medicated ear drops. These drops may contain antibiotics to kill bacteria or steroids to stop swelling.

Some drops use acetic acid, which is a diluted form of vinegar, to help. To prevent it, you should avoid putting small objects in your ears. It is also helpful to keep ears dry after swimming. Using earplugs can help, but they must fit well so they do not scratch the skin.
