This is very sudden. We do not know why it happens. It is most common in boys.

Most of these deaths happen before a baby is six months old. They often happen while the baby is sleeping. This can happen in the middle of the night.

Certain things can change the risk. For example, sleeping on the stomach can be a risk. Being too warm can also be a risk.

Smoke from tobacco can be a risk too. It is also a risk if a baby is born very early. These things can make the risk higher.

We can help keep babies safe. The best way is to put a baby on their back to sleep.

This helps many babies stay safe.
