The Shigir Idol is a very special treasure from the past.

It is the oldest wooden sculpture known in the whole world. This object is much older than the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Most wooden things rot and disappear over time. However, this statue stayed safe for thousands of years. It was hidden in a wet, swampy place called a peat bog. This special environment kept the wood from breaking down. Now, it sits in a museum in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Making the sculpture was a big job for ancient people.

The statue is carved from a tree called larch. Experts looked at the tree rings to learn more. They found the tree was at least 159 years old when it was cut down. People used stone tools to carve many different patterns. They even used three different sizes of chisels. One researcher found that they might have used a beaver jaw bone too. They used the sharp teeth of the beaver to carve some faces.

Finding the idol was a major event in history.

It was discovered on January 24, 1890. People found it in a peat bog in Shigir, Russia. This area is on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals. The sculpture was found deep underground in many different parts. A man named Professor D. I. Lobanov put the main pieces back together. Later, an archaeologist named Tolmachev suggested a different way to build it. He thought the statue could have been even taller.

Scientists have worked hard to find the exact age of the idol.

At first, some tests said it was 9,500 years old. Many scholars did not believe that number at the time. They thought people living then could not make such a huge object. Later, a German analysis said it was 11,500 years old. New studies in 2021 showed it is close to 10,000 years old. This makes it a very important piece of art from the early Holocene period.

No one knows exactly why the people carved the idol.

The surface has many faces, hands, and zigzag lines. Some experts think the carvings tell a creation myth. Others think the lines might be a map for traveling. A researcher named Mikhail Zhilin thought they might be forest spirits. Another person, Peter Vang Peterson, thought it could be a warning. This discovery changed what we know about ancient art. It shows that people made complex art much earlier than we once thought.
