It was found in 1890 in a Russian peat bog. A peat bog is a wet, swampy place. This wet ground helped keep the wood from rotting. The statue is made from larch wood.

Scientists think it is about 11,500 years old. This makes it much older than the Great Pyramids in Egypt. People used stone tools to carve it. One expert thinks they even used a beaver jaw to help. The statue has many faces on its body. It also has lines and zigzag patterns. Some people think these patterns tell a story. Others think the lines might be a map. It might even show forest spirits. The carvings change how we think about old art. We used to think complex art was much newer. This statue shows that people made great art a long time ago.
