Monte Verde

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

In southern Chile, scientists found a very old site. It is called Monte Verde. It sits near a small creek. A student found a strange bone there in 1975. That bone was from a large animal. It was related to modern elephants.

An expert named Tom Dillehay began to dig there in 1977. He found a campsite from a long time ago. About twenty to thirty people lived there. They built tents using wood and animal skins. They used ropes made from local reeds to tie the skins. They also had small fires for cooking.

These people ate many things. They ate nuts, seeds, and fruit. They even ate seaweed from the ocean. They also hunted large animals that are now extinct. Some scientists think these people traveled by sea. This is called the coastal migration model. It suggests people moved along the coastlines.

Monte Verde is very important. It shows people lived in the Americas much earlier than we once thought. A wet bog covered the site. This helped keep tools and bones safe for a very long time.
