It sits on the coast north of Antofagasta. The arch was made by marine erosion. This is a way the sea wears down rocks. Over a long time, the waves shaped the land. The arch is 43 meters high. It is 23 meters wide and 70 meters long. The base is made of black andesite stone. You can also see yellow sandstone. There are fossils of old shells in the rocks. These shells are 2 to 35 million years old.

Many animals live near the arch. You can see birds like pelicans and gulls. Some birds are called guano birds. These include the Inca tern and the Peruvian booby. You might even see a dolphin or a fur seal.
