It is located in a region called Upper Mesopotamia. This site is famous for its huge stone pillars. These pillars are among the oldest known megaliths in the world. A megalith is a very large stone used for building. People lived at this site a long time ago. They stayed there from about 9500 BC to 8000 BC.

The site is built on a rocky mountaintop. It sits on a limestone plateau near the Taurus Mountains.

The people who lived there were very clever. They used soft limestone to build their structures. They also used flint to make their stone tools. To get water, they made a special system. They carved channels to catch rainwater. This water flowed into stone pits called cisterns. These pits could hold a lot of water for the village.

Archaeologists have studied this site for many years. A survey first noticed it in 1963. Later, a German archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt found it very important. He began digging there in 1995.

After he died in 2014, other experts kept working. They work together from Istanbul University and the Şanlıurfa Museum. They also work with the German Archaeological Institute. Now, a scientist named Necmi Karul leads the work. They have only dug up about 10% of the site.

The stone pillars are very special to see. Many are shaped like the letter T.

These pillars have many carvings on them. You can see wild animals like gazelles and foxes. Some pillars even show people wearing clothes.

These carvings give us clues about how people thought. Some people call these structures the world's first temples. Experts are still learning if they were for religion or for living. They found tools for grinding grain and processing food.

Learning about Göbekli Tepe helps us understand human history. It was built during the Neolithic period. This was a time when people began to live in permanent villages.

Before this, many people moved around to find food. This change is often called the Neolithic Revolution. It is linked to the start of farming. In 2018, Göbekli Tepe became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place of great value to everyone.
