Shift work is a way to keep services or production lines running at all times.

Instead of everyone working during the day, the day is split into set periods. These periods are called shifts. Different groups of people perform their duties during each specific time. Some workers stay on long-term night shifts. Other workers use schedules where they change or rotate shifts. This system allows businesses to operate twenty-four hours a day.

There are many different ways to plan these work schedules. A common way is the three-shift plan for eight-hour workdays. In this plan, the day is divided into three blocks. The first shift begins in the morning. Each worker stays in the same block every workday.

Some workers rotate through different shifts. This can be fast or slow. Fast rotation means a worker changes shifts more than once a week. Slow rotation means they change less than once a week. Forward rotation starts each shift later in the day. This is often easier for the body to handle.

Shift work has a long history in the world. It began in modern manufacturing during the late 18th century.

In 1867, Karl Marx wrote about how production drives the use of labor throughout the whole day. He noted that workers must alternate between day and night. This system was very common in the English cotton industry. It was also used in factories in the Moscow gubernia. In England, it was used in places like blast-furnaces and rolling mills. Even the Cromford Mill used two twelve-hour shifts starting in 1772.

Many different jobs use shift work today.

It is very common in healthcare and emergency services. Police, firefighters, and hospital workers often work long shifts. Twelve-hour shifts are used in the petroleum industry. Twenty-four-hour shifts are common in emergency services. Even the railroads use it so freight trains can run at night. About 15% to 20% of workers in industrialized countries use shift work. It is also used in telecommunications and weather monitoring.

Working these hours can be a hard job for the body. It can disrupt a person's circadian rhythm. This is the body's natural internal clock.

Night workers sleep one to four hours less than daytime workers. This can lead to sleep disorders like insomnia. It can also increase the risk of diabetes or heart disease. Some studies show it may affect weight and muscle health. Managers can help by providing more breaks. They can also ensure there are at least 10 hours between shifts to help workers sleep.
