Instead of everyone working at once, the day is split into parts. These parts are called shifts. Different groups of people work during each shift.

Some people work eight hours. Others work twelve or even twenty-four hours. This is common in hospitals and for police officers. It is also used in factories and on trains. In the past, shift work began in the late 1700s. It helped factories make much more than they could in one day.

Shift work can be hard on the body. It can change a person's circadian rhythm. This is the body's natural clock for sleep and waking.

Working at night can make it hard to sleep. It can also lead to health issues like diabetes or heart disease. Managers can help by giving more breaks or using bright lights. They can also make sure workers have enough time to rest between jobs.
