Daylight saving time

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Daylight saving time is a way to use more sunlight. People call it DST or summer time. It works by moving clocks ahead in the spring. This makes the sun set later in the evening. In the fall, people set the clocks back one hour.

This helps people have more light after they finish work or school. It is very useful in places far from the equator. Near the equator, the amount of daylight does not change much.

How does this clock change work? Most people follow a set schedule for work and school. This schedule stays the same all year long. In the summer, the sun rises very early. At 4:30 in the morning, most people are still sleeping. By moving the clock forward, we treat 4:30 as if it were 5:30. This shifts the daylight to the evening hours.

People can then use that light for fun activities.

People have thought about time for a long time. Ancient Romans used water clocks to tell time. These clocks actually changed based on the season. In the summer, their hours were much longer. In the winter, the hours were much shorter.

Benjamin Franklin once wrote a funny letter about saving light. He suggested people wake up earlier to save on candles. He did not actually suggest changing the clocks, though.

Modern ideas for DST came from specific people. George Hudson was an insect expert from New Zealand. In 1895, he proposed changing clocks by two hours.

Later, William Willett made a proposal in 1907. He was an English builder who loved golf.

He wanted more daylight to enjoy his games. The first cities to use DST were in Ontario, Canada. They started doing this in May of 1908.

Many nations began using DST during big wars. The German and Austro-Hungarian Empires started in April 1916. They wanted to save coal during the war.

The United States started using it in 1918. Many countries used it again during World War II. Today, about 34 percent of the world uses DST. Most of these places are in Europe and North America.
