history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Shanhai Pass is a very important gateway in China. It sits at the eastern end of the Great Wall. This pass guards a narrow spot in the land. This spot is between the Yan Mountains and the Bohai Sea. It is the only easy way to travel between North and Northeast China. Because it was so vital, people called it the "Greatest Pass Under Heaven."

The pass works as a strong defense. It sits at a choke point in the Liaoxi Corridor. This is a narrow coastal plain. An invading army would find it very hard to pass. They would have to fight a costly siege. The only other way is through tiny mountain paths. These paths are very narrow and dangerous. It is hard to move supplies through them. This made the pass a great shield for the heartland.

Many groups built walls in this area over time. The Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties all built passes here. In the year 1381, a general named Xu Da repaired old passes. He built the Shanhai Pass we see today. The name means "mountain-sea-pass." Later, General Qi Jiguang built more forts and cities. He made it one of the most heavily fortified places in China.

History shows how much this place mattered. In 1644, a rebel leader named Li Zicheng took the capital. A general named Wu Sangui joined with the Manchu Qing dynasty. Together, they defeated the rebels near the pass. This helped the Qing dynasty become the main power in China. In 1900, Japanese troops landed here during a conflict. Later, in 1948, the Communist Northeast Field Army took control. The pass has seen many big changes in its long life.

Today, the pass is a famous place to visit. You can see where the Great Wall meets the sea. People call this spot the "Old Dragon's Head." It is a World Heritage Site from UNESCO. In 1961, China named it a major protected historical site. You can even take a train to visit it. The Shanhaiguan railway station is very close to the old walls. It is a great way to see history in person.
