Many groups built walls here long ago. The Ming dynasty built the pass we see today. They made it a strong fort to protect the capital city. General Qi Jiguang built many cities and forts nearby. This made it one of the strongest places in China.

In the year 1644, a big change happened. A rebel army took the capital city. A general named Wu Sangui joined with the Manchus. Together, they defeated the rebels near the pass. This helped the Qing dynasty rule China.
