He was famous for being a master of many different skills. Most players focus on just one job on the field. However, Baugh played three different roles for the Washington Redskins. He was a quarterback who threw the ball. He was also a punter who kicked the ball away. Finally, he played safety on the defense to stop other teams. He is credited with making the forward pass a powerful weapon in football.

Baugh learned his skills through a lot of hard work. As a teenager in Sweetwater, Texas, he practiced for many hours. He would throw a football through a swinging automobile tire. This helped him learn how to throw accurately while moving. He actually practiced punting even more than he practiced throwing. Before he became a football star, he wanted to play professional baseball. He even earned the nickname "Slinging Sammy" from a sports writer. He played third base and shortstop in the minor leagues. Sadly, a knee injury during a baseball game changed his path.

His journey to the pros began at Texas Christian University. At TCU, he played three sports: football, baseball, and basketball. He was a two-time All-American and led the Horned Frogs to two bowl wins. He even won the MVP award in the first Cotton Bowl Classic in 1937. The Washington Redskins selected him in the first round of the 1937 NFL draft. He signed a contract for $8,000, which was the highest pay on his team. In his first year, he helped the Redskins win an NFL Championship. He set a record by throwing for 1,127 yards as a rookie.

Baugh had many amazing seasons during his 16-year career. In 1942, he helped the Redskins win another NFL Championship. His most incredible year was 1943, which many call a great single-season performance. That year, he led the league in passing, punting, and interceptions. He was the only player to lead in all three categories in one season. In 1945, he set a completion record that lasted until 1982. He also helped create the "Baugh/Marshall Rule" after a ball hit a goal post. This rule changed the game so that such passes are now incomplete.

Even after he stopped playing, Baugh stayed involved in football. He served as a coach for the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys. He also coached the New York Titans and the Houston Oilers. His many achievements earned him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. He was also named to the NFL's 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time teams. Baugh set 13 different NFL records during his time in the league. People still compare his skill to the best players playing today. He truly changed how the game of football is played.
