He is famous for his incredible strength and unique running style. People called him the "Czech Locomotive" because he ran with such power. His face often looked very strained from the hard work. He even made loud breathing sounds while he raced. He believed in training very hard to be the best. This dedication helped him become one of the greatest runners ever.

Zátopek used a special way to train called interval training. He made this method popular after World War II. He often practiced in any kind of weather, even in the snow. Sometimes he even wore heavy work boots instead of running shoes. To stay relaxed, he had a clever trick. He would gently touch his thumb to his index finger. This helped keep his arms and shoulders from getting too tight.

His running journey started by accident at a shoe factory.

At age 16, a strict coach ordered him to run a race. Zátopek thought he was too weak to compete. However, he finished second out of 100 runners. This sparked a lifelong interest in athletics. He soon joined a local club to study great runners. By 1944, he was breaking many Czechoslovak records.

His most amazing moment happened at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

He won gold medals in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres. At the last minute, he decided to run the marathon too. He had never run a marathon before! He won that race as well, setting an Olympic record. He is the only person to win all three events in one Olympics. In 1954, he also became the first to break 29 minutes in the 10,000 metres.

Zátopek was a kind man who spoke six different languages.

He loved making friends with athletes from all over the world. His wife, Dana Zátopková, was also an Olympic gold medalist. They had a very playful and happy relationship. Today, his name is still honored in many ways. There is a large bronze statue of him in Zlín. He is also a member of the IAAF Hall of Fame.
